What Is Testosterone
Discover The Importance Of Testosterone And How It Works In The Body
Of all hormones, it is Testosterone that is without any doubt the #1 male sex hormone. Responsible for a mans physical, sexual and reproductive development
Present in both males and females, it is as we enter puberty that its effects in males really kick in. Its production dramatically increases, encouraging the development of our sex organs, the growth of body hair, our deepening voices, and muscle growth.
It regulates our moods, distribution of body fat and fertility.
In fact you can sum it up quite simply by saying that it is responsible for everything that makes us a man.
Women too, need testosterone, but to a much lesser degree than men. it also helps to maintain bone health. They make it in their adrenal glands and ovaries.
Testosterone belongs to a class of steroid hormones known as Androgens. They can also be referred to as anabolic steroids .
It is made in the testes, and is the results of a complex hormonal process that starts in the hypothalamus in the brain.
The hypothalamus sends messages via a hormone called GnRH to the pituitary gland, this triggers the release of two hormones – luteinising hormone (LH) and Follicle Stimulating Hormone (FSH).
These hormones are sent to glands in the testes where they trigger the them into producing testosterone.
As we pass though puberty and head into adulthood, the secondary effect of testosterone is sexual maturity. Our penis and testes reach their full size, and growth of body hair reaches its peak.
Testosterone also plays a crucial part in the control and regulation of red blood cell production, fat distribution, semen production, and sperm motility.
As most keen gym goers know, Testosterone also helps control our muscle mass, tone and strength
The effects of testosterone stretch even further than that. It helps maintain our general health, it can also help guard against bone conditions such as osteoporosis.
Too Much Testosterone
if a man has too much testosterone he can be found to be aggressive, have excess body hair and have bad acne. rather strangely, he could also be suffering from low libido.
Women can suffer even more from too much testosterone, they can experience problems that include increased body hair, deepening of the voice, irregular periods and if left unchecked, abnormal growth of the clitoris – So much so that it can resemble a tiny penis.
This is a problem called Clitoromegaly
Women who suffer from polycystic ovarian syndrome can usually be found to have higher than normal testosterone levels.
Low Testosterone
In most healthy men, their blood testosterone levels should be recorded at between 300ng.dl and 1000ng.dl
Your testosterone readings can easily be checked by a simple good test.
The morning is the most accurate time for the test.
If your blood testosterone levels are found to be lower than 300ng.dl you are considered to have low T (doctors often refer to this as hypogonadism.)
If you have low T you could experience some or all of the following effects:
- Weak, or non existant erections
- Poor sex drive
- Shrunken genitals
- Lost muscle tone
- Increased body fat
- Reduced sleep
- Poor moods
Treating Low Testosterone
If your test results indicate low T, your doctor right recommend a course of TRT (Testosterone replacement therapy)
This is basically the passing of synthetic or man made testosterone into the body. there are a number of methods that can be used and can include;
- Patches
- Gels
- Creams
- Injections
- Pills
- Implants
Of all these options, creams and gels are the most common. There are however some risks associated with these forms of topical treatments, especially concerning children and female partners.
Care has to be taken when using these treatments, as its possible to transfer the testosterone to others which can results in some quite unpleasant side effects.
When using creams and gels, you must always wash hands immediately after applying and keep the area covered to stop any skin to skin transference.
Side Effects Of TRT
Although it can be quite effective, TRT has been linked to some quite nasty side effects. These can include:
- Shortness of breath
- Chest pains
- Liver and kidney problems
- Increase blood cell count
- Hair Loss
- Increased risk of heart attacks and strokes
- Lost muscle tone
- Slurred speech
It is also thought to be a precursor to certain cancers inparticularly those involving the prostate.
Most doctors do tend to think that the benefits of TRT outweighs the potential risks.
LawSuits
In the US there have been hundreds of lawsuits brought by men who after using certain testosterone gels and creams suffered heart attacks as a direct result.
They are claiming that the manufacturers of these treatments, were aware of the potential risks and failed to advise both the prescribing doctors and the public themselves.
Bodybuilding and Anabolic Steroids
Men across the world spend billions of dollars on supplements, pills, potions and other products that claim to help them maximise their results from the gym.
There are a hardcore group of bodybuilders who turn to injectable anabolic steroids to try and speed and force their results.
Although there is no doubting the fact that in general they really work, their use is highly controversial with men (and women) suffering some serious, even life changing side effects.
I strongly recommend that whatever you do to build your muscles, avoid anabolic steroids at all costs, they can kill in some cases, but in most users, they will leave you with some serious health issues.
Natural Testosterone Boosters
With all the risks associated with both anabolic steroids and drug based TRT, more and more men are now looking to natural T-boosting supplements to help maintain their testosterone production.
Nature has been very kind to us and has provided us with a number of minerals, vitamins and herbal extracts that are known to work in the body to encourage and promote the body into making more of its own natural testosterone.
Instead of forcing a foreign, man made hormone into our body which can cause some nasty reactions and health issues.
A natural T booster helps us make more of our own genetic hormone, the resulting benefits can help any man, regardless of age or requirements.
Keen gym goers will experience better muscle tone, improvements in strength and muscle tone, and increased energy.
Slightly older men will find that they quickly start to regain their youthful energy, muscle tone, and sex drive. They can also benefit from improved moods, better sleep quality and reduced body fat.
